Mal Bien Tepextate - Cortes
A tepeztate that bets on bitterness
Score: 4.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Agave Mixtape, Mal Bien

- Region: Miahuatlán, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tepextate
- ABV: 50%
- Price: $70 ($$)
Verdict
Mal Bien's tepeztate is more aggressive than its Mezcalosfera or Jolgorio counterparts and less polished than its Lalocura counterpart. If you like tepeztate for its herbal side over its fruit, this is the one.
The opposite of a crowd-pleaser – which is a kind of crowd-pleaser
Tasting notes
Nose: Dry herbs, white pepper, wet stone, a late citrus note
Palate: Drier and more peppery than the tropical-forward tepeztates – this is the austere camp, concentrated by 50% ABV
Finish: Bitter-bright, cooling – very long
The bottom line
A tepeztate with conviction. Buy it before the lot is gone
