Mala Idea Tobala
A 4% tobalá (typo or bottling error) – either way, a pass
Score: 2.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Mala Idea Mezcal
- Maestro: Celestino Sernas
- Region: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tobala
- ABV: 4%
- Price: $70 ($$)
Verdict
The listed 4% ABV is almost certainly a data error for something around 45%, which is itself below where tobalá wants to live. Celestino Sernas makes a competent everyday cuishe but his tobalá lands as the weakest bottle in the Mala Idea lineup. Pass and spend the money on Mal Bien Ramos tobalá at 49%.
Even granting the typo, this tobalá doesn't clear the bar
Tasting notes
Nose: Honey, then faint floral, soft mineral
Palate: If the stated 4% ABV is accurate, this bottle does not legally qualify as mezcal; assuming it's a data error for ~45%, the tobalá drinks polite and underproofed, potatorum florals muted
Finish: Soft, fades. Short
The bottom line
Pass. A tobalá that doesn't argue for itself
