Marquéz Reposado

Reposado that loses the argument on both sides

Score: 2.5/5 agaves

  • Producer: Jaral de Berrio Mezcal
  • Region: Guanajuato
  • Agave: Espadin
  • ABV: 40%
  • Price: $50 ($)

Verdict

The aged mezcal problem in miniature: if the spirit underneath can't carry weight, the oak just muffles the conversation. Marquez reposado drinks like a beginner-friendly tequila cosplaying as mezcal. Skip for anything from Del Maguey's aged line or simply a higher-proof joven.

The barrel smooths a spirit that already surrendered at 40%

Tasting notes

Nose: Oak, caramel, faint smoke, nothing assertive

Palate: The barrel rounds what little edge this espadín had – 40% ABV plus wood equals a drink that apologizes for both the spirit and the cask

Finish: Oaky, clean. Short

The bottom line

Pass. Aged mezcal needs proof first, time second
