Maximo Joven

Bar-well espadín made to be mixed, not considered

Score: 2.0/5 agaves

Maximo Joven bottle
  • Producer: Maximo Twenty-First Century Mezcal
  • Region: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
  • Agave: Espadin
  • ABV: 40%
  • Price: $39 ($)

Verdict

Maximo is the kind of anonymous espadín that crowds the under-$30 shelf – not offensive, not interesting. Vida covers this ground more honestly at roughly the same cost. Skip unless you're stocking a mezcal Paloma station and can't justify anything more expensive.

Built for a price point, priced for a bar well

Tasting notes

Nose: Sweet with with the soft kerosene note cheap copper leaves behind

Palate: No real texture to the mid-palate, a quiet finish that doesn't linger; light and thin at 40%

Finish: Clean, forgettable

The bottom line

Skip. Vida is the honest answer at this price
