Mestizo Joven
Correct and thin – the 40% espadín problem in one bottle
Score: 2.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Mestizo Mezcal
- Maestro: Juan José Méndez-León Jiménez
- Region: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 40%
- Price: $40 ($)
Verdict
Méndez-León Jiménez has better work on other labels – Mestizo Joven is the bottle that exists because the line needed an entry SKU, and the maestro's signature is present only in outline. Skip for Banhez Espadín or Vida; come back to Mestizo for the aged line.
Another commercial-spec 40% espadín in a category full of them
Tasting notes
Nose: Light cooked agave, green apple
Palate: 40% with the espadín notes hinted at but never carried, the mid-palate is the short-change version of what this maestro delivers elsewhere
Finish: Clean, fades quickly, short
The bottom line
A skip. The maestro's better bottles are elsewhere
