Verdict
Mezcalero No. 2 is Cosme Hernandez putting three distinct agave voices into one bottle and letting each have a verse. The result is more complex than any of the three alone, at a proof that carries all the weight. The Mezcalero format at its most characteristic – track a bottle if the series is on your shelf.
When the wilds show up on the label, they should show up on the palate. They do
Tasting notes
Nose: Wet limestone with ripe melon, tropical fruit rind
Palate: 48.2% with tepextate and tobalá each making themselves heard over the espadín base – a high-toned, aromatic ensamble without the thinness that can afflict wild-forward blends
Finish: Floral, mineral. Long
The bottom line
Chase it down. Classic Mezcalero chord
