Mezcalero No. 29

Tepextate under 48% – the ceiling is visible

Score: 3.0/5 agaves

Mezcalero No. 29 bottle
  • Producer: Mezcalero Mezcal

  • Region: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
  • Agave: Tepextate
  • ABV: 46.5%
  • Price: $70 ($$)

Verdict

Octavio Jiménez Monterroza's tepextate is competently made but presented at a proof that undersells the agave, tepextate consistently rewards 48%+ bottlings and struggles under that bar. Mezcalero No. 25 (tobalá) and No. 26 (arroqueño) are stronger releases in the same series; pour this only for completionists of the line.

Tepextate at 46.5% is tepextate with one arm tied

Tasting notes

Nose: Wildflower, green herb

Palate: 46.5% with tepextate present but subdued, the agave's floral brilliance shows up in outline; the concentration the proof should unlock isn't quite there

Finish: Herbal, clean. Stays medium-long

The bottom line

Pass for Memorable Tepeztate. Better tepextate elsewhere
