Verdict

Sierra negra is another wild agave that rarely headlines, and Joel Antonio Cruz makes a persuasive case for it here, paired with tepextate for aromatic lift, at a proof that carries the weight. Mezcalero No. 4 is an older entry in the series that holds up next to newer releases.

Sierra negra doesn't tour often. Cruz puts it on the main stage

Tasting notes

Nose: Dark herb with ripe stone fruit, floral top

Palate: 48.3% with sierra negra's heavier, more resinous profile mixing with tepextate's high-toned lift, the ensamble is broad-shouldered but never heavy

Finish: Mineral, herbal – long

The bottom line

Track it down. An interesting sierra-negra-forward ensamble
