Verdict

The Mezcalero Special Bottling line exists to present single agaves at proofs and concentrations the regular line can't reach, and Alberto Ortiz's madrecuishe is a textbook example. This is the proof madrecuishe wants, bottled by a maestro who knows what to do with it. Hunt it – one of the series' best releases.

Madrecuishe at 50% is madrecuishe as intended

Tasting notes

Nose: Crushed herb, then wet limestone, green apple, fine smoke

Palate: 50% lets madrecuishe finally stand straight – the dry mineral spine carries the whole palate, the agave's structure fully realized without any soft spot

Finish: Limestone, austere – very long

The bottom line

Worth chasing. Reference madrecuishe
