Verdict
Azul is tequila's agave; nobody expects to find it producing a mezcal this coherent. Traditional Oaxacan methods on the tequila base delivers a spirit that's drier, more mineral, and less industrial than anything blanco tequila ships. A bottle that reframes what drinkers think azul can be when the production doesn't start and end in Jalisco.
Azul agave done with mezcal rigor is a different thing than tequila
Tasting notes
Nose: Cooked agave, then citrus, clean smoke
Palate: Bright and disciplined at 48% – azul in a mezcal context
Finish: Mineral, clean – long
The bottom line
An unusual and excellent Mezcalero
