Mezcalosfera Tobala
Ageo Cortés's tobalá – quieter than the shelf's references
Score: 3.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Mezcalosfera de Mezcaloteca
- Maestro: Ageo Cortés
- Region: Miahuatlán, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tobala
- ABV: 48.38%
- Price: $150 ($$)
Verdict
Ageo Cortés's tobalá is a competent but modest release, the agave is present, the proof is adequate, but the bottle lands as a step below Mezcalero No. 25, Banhez Tobalá at price, or the Memorable range at ceiling. Pour for completionists; reach for the reference bottles otherwise.
Not every Mezcalosfera is a masterpiece. This is one that isn't
Tasting notes
Nose: Wildflower, honey, green melon
Palate: 48.38% with tobalá present but less concentrated than the top tobalás in the category, the floral lift shows, the mid-palate thins
Finish: Medium-long, floral, clean
The bottom line
A pass for Mezcalero No. 25 or Banhez Tobalá
