Verdict
Mezcasiarca's clay-pot tobalá trades some of the agave's characteristic aromatic lift for the earthen, mineral weight the technique provides – a fair trade for drinkers who already know the copper version and want to hear tobalá in a different register. A capable release; not the ceiling bottle of the Mezcasiarca catalog but a credible entry.
Clay-pot tobalá is tobalá with both feet on the ground
Tasting notes
Nose: Honey, wet clay, ripe melon, mineral dust
Palate: ~50% with tobalá's tropical roundness given an earthen grounding by the clay-pot technique – less lifted than copper tobalá, more rooted in place
Finish: Floral, earthen – long
The bottom line
Pour for technique flights. Mezcalero No. 25 still wins for copper tobalá
