Miel de Tierra Reposado
Lightly oaked azul at 40% – a middle position no one asked for
Score: 2.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Miel de Tierra Mezcal
- Maestro: Teresa Rubio Murillo
- Region: Jalpa, Zacatecas
- Agave: Azul
- ABV: 40%
- Price: $60 ($$)
Verdict
A reposado mezcal at 40% is a category confusion – neither the clean-face reading that joven gives nor the full commitment of an añejo. Teresa Rubio Murillo gets the mechanics right; the concept is what fails.
Reposado mezcal is a marketing category. This bottle proves it
Tasting notes
Nose: Oak shavings, then cooked pineapple, vanilla, faint smoke
Palate: 40% azul with a quick stint in wood – the oak is present but not integrated, and the base liquid doesn't have enough weight to carry the barrel
Finish: Woody, sweet – short
The bottom line
A skip. The format is the problem, not the producer
