Verdict

Montelobos' ensamble is made with care by people who know production – Iván Saldaña is a trained enologist, and the discipline shows at every level of the bottle. That's not the critique; the critique is that the liquid tastes like it was made by someone hitting a spec sheet rather than chasing a voice. Technically correct, editorially anonymous. Consensus 3.5 grades the technique; we grade the mezcal.

Safety is a choice. Sometimes it's the wrong one

Tasting notes

Nose: Light smoke, pear, a clean oak note

Palate: Smooth, even, agreeably mid-weight – the enologist's hand clearly present

Finish: Clean, slightly sweet

The bottom line

Consistent, clean, and quietly uninteresting
