Verdict
Montelobos is made by a trained enologist – Iván Saldaña's project, and it shows: the bottle is well-built and deeply unobjectionable. Which is also the critique. Mezcal's category identity is built on idiosyncrasy, producer voice, and regional specificity; Montelobos at 43% flattens all three into a commercial template. 3.5 consensus is a touch high. Fine for what it's trying to be; not what we ask the category to be.
Correct, consistent, and a little anonymous
Tasting notes
Nose: Green apple with pineapple candy
Palate: Friendly, middle-weight, smoother than most in the price bracket but without much to say
Finish: Faintly sweet, clean
The bottom line
A safe cocktail bottle. Pass for sipping
