Morro Espadin
El Gramal espadín at 45% – quietly one of the better entry bottles

- Producer: Morro Mezcal
- Maestro: Juan Lopez Olivera
- Region: El Gramal, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 45%
- Price: $70 ($)
Verdict
El Gramal is a town worth knowing – smaller than Matatlán, more mineral in character, and Morro's espadín under Juan Lopez Olivera is a fair argument for both. 45% is where espadín starts telling the truth about itself, and the liquid here is honest, dry-finishing, and unshowy. Five reviewers at 3.8 matches our read. A sensible entry bottle that doesn't need a higher ABV to say something.
If you can't find Banhez, Morro Espadín is the next sensible shelf
Tasting notes
Nose: Warm cooked agave, green melon, wet stone, a soft smoke thread
Palate: 45% espadín with El Gramal's mineral character – mid-weight, clean-faced, with more savory structure than the Matatlán average
Finish: River rock, dry
The bottom line
A reliable $40-ish bottle. Worth keeping on hand
