Mortal Cupreata

Tlalixtac cupreata – a curious choice, a middling result

Verdict

Cupreata's best home is Michoacán, where altitude and soil feed the agave's orchard-and-mineral register. Oaxaca-grown cupreata is a legitimate project, and Mortal's attempt is competent – but the native-home versions from Mocel or Mizquiri show you what the variety can actually do. No consensus data yet; our read places this in the credible-middle tier.

Cupreata outside Michoacán is possible. This one shows why most stay home

Tasting notes

Nose: Cooked apple, then light earth, green herb, vanilla

Palate: 44% cupreata grown and distilled outside Michoacán, the orchard note is there but the structure is softer than a Michoacán reading

Finish: Short-medium, sweet-savory, clean

The bottom line

A skip unless you're A/B-ing cupreata terroirs
