Wood-aging that mutes the only thing worth tasting

Verdict
Nucano's reposado does the thing wood-aged mezcals do: it softens the liquid and hides the agave. If the joven is the house's honest bottle, this is the marketing one, the shelf argument for aging without the liquid argument for it. Skip toward the joven, or toward a producer who doesn't feel the need to reach for a barrel at all.

Tasting notes
Nose: Light oak, toffee, a vestigial agave note
Palate: At 40% and with oak on top, the espadín plays as a supporting ingredient. Smooth in the inoffensive sense
Finish: Sweet, faintly woody
The bottom line
Skip. The joven does more with less
