Verdict
Oax Original's tobalá clears the bar more cleanly than its tepextate sibling, because 44% is a reasonable proof for potatorum in a way it isn't for tepextate. The result is a legitimate wild-agave bottle that isn't hiding behind marketing. Banhez Tobalá is still the budget king; this is the next step up if you've worn that one out.
This is what tobalá is supposed to read as when producers trust the agave to do the work
Tasting notes
Nose: Wildflower honey with pink peppercorn, clean limestone
Palate: Lifted and concentrated at 44%, the potatorum's high-floral register intact and sitting on a bed of cooked-agave sweetness. No rough edges, no artificial polish
Finish: Minerally, with a dry honey tail
The bottom line
Stock when you want to climb past Banhez without breaking the bank
