Verdict

Chacaleño is less a different agave than a different idiom of the same agave, and Origen Raíz captures the distinction without overselling it. Reach for this when you want to taste what espadín does outside Matatlán, drier, grassier, more austere. Not the brand's best bottle, but a useful one for anyone studying Durango.

The Durango dialect of espadín – recognizable, but with its own accent

Tasting notes

Nose: Green agave, dry grass, citrus zest

Palate: Brighter and more vegetal than a Oaxaca espadín, at 48% and with a Durango-specific herbal register that reads drier and more desert-leaning

Finish: Clean, grass-forward. Medium

The bottom line

Reach for it when you want espadín that doesn't taste like Oaxaca
