Verdict
Becuela is not on most drinkers' radar and probably shouldn't be until after a solid karwinskii education. Pasión Ancestral's version renders the species with the respect the clay-still implies – no tricks, no shortcuts. Reach for it when you're past the usual Oaxacan suspects and want to extend your agave vocabulary.
Becuela is the agave you go looking for after you've met every better-known one
Tasting notes
Nose: Wet stone with a mineral top, faint cooked agave
Palate: 51% of becuela distilled ancestral – drier and more austere than tobaziche, with a clay-still roughness that suits the species' quiet character
Finish: Stone, dry
The bottom line
Reach for it as a karwinskii-family extension, not a first bottle
