Verdict
Pierde Almas has stronger bottles than this in its catalog; the tobalá is a middle-of-the-pack expression that the price doesn't quite justify. At 48% the tobalá signature should show up more than it does, which points to something upstream in the production chain rather than a proof-budget issue. 3.8 consensus is a hair too generous. The Pierde Almas range rewards cherry-picking; this isn't one to reach for when the Jolgorio, Lalocura, or 5 Sentidos tobalás are on the same shelf.
Competent tobalá in a category where competent isn't enough
Tasting notes
Nose: Wildflower, then sweet smoke, cooked pineapple, a faintly medicinal note
Palate: Correctly made but curiously flat – the tobalá's usual lift is muted. 48% is appropriate but not distinctive
Finish: Drying, faintly bitter
The bottom line
Fine. The Jolgorio or Lalocura tobalás outperform at closer money
