Verdict
Pluma Negra's 40% bottling is a bar-program product, not a sipping product. The liquid is cleaner than most 40% mezcals (which tend toward diesel and plastic), but the proof ceiling is the story regardless. Skip for sipping. The 48% version from the same brand is the one to reach for when you want what Pluma Negra can actually do.
40% is a cocktail proof; this bottle knows it
Tasting notes
Nose: Cooked agave with cucumber cool
Palate: Thin, easy, polite. 40% proof on espadín means the plant cannot show its full structure – the liquid reads clean but hollow. Well-made within its intentional ceiling
Finish: Gentle, clean – short
The bottom line
A skip. Pay up for the 48%
