Verdict
Onofre Ortiz handles tepextate cleanly, but 47.4% is the proof where the plant negotiates between finish and ambition, and the negotiation shows. Compared to the same producer's arroqueño-tepextate ensamble, this single-maguey bottle feels slightly held back. Track the ensamble first; return to this one for comparison. Pluma Negra's 52% tepextate remains the proof argument.
Tepextate at 47.4% is right on the line
Tasting notes
Nose: Green melon walks in first. Then mint, a cool mineral note
Palate: Pretty but just short of committed. Tepextate wants 48%+ to fully open, and at 47.4% Onofre Ortiz's bottle lands in the zone where the plant's structure is audible but not loud. Clean work, incomplete commitment
Finish: Green, clean, medium
The bottom line
Pass unless you're mapping Ortiz's catalog
