Verdict
Rayo (also called rayu, rayodos) is a wild agave that rarely gets single-maguey bottlings. Primitivo Vásquez's work here is a reference release via Quiote. The austere green-mineral profile is different from cuishe or tepextate, a real discovery for drinkers who think they know the rare-agave category. Track it alongside the Rayo Seco brand's cenizo work.
Rayo is the plant Quiote Mezcalería exists to champion
Tasting notes
Nose: Dry grass, green citrus, wet stone, faint herb
Palate: Lean and structural. Rayo is a less-celebrated agave that rewards producers who don't dress it up. Primitivo Vásquez keeps his hand off, lets the plant's green-mineral signature stand. 45-50% range carries it
Finish: Dry, flinty, long
The bottom line
Worth chasing. Rare-agave lane, strong bottle
