Rezpiral Penca de Espadin
Actually arroqueño, labeled espadín – a mislabeling that's also a rarity
Score: 4.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Rezpiral
- Maestro: Simeon Ramirez
- Region: San Agustín Amatengo, Oaxaca
- Agave: Arroqueño
- ABV: 50%
- Price: $70 ($$)
Verdict
Rezpiral openly notes this bottle was mislabeled: the agave is arroqueño, not espadín. What's in the glass is a dense, warm, 50% arroqueño with Simeón Ramírez's San Agustín Amatengo hand on it. If you've been drinking Rezpiral's other Simeón and Apolonio bottles, this is the unexpected standout. Buy it and ignore the label.
The label says espadín – the liquid corrects the record
Tasting notes
Nose: Dark honey, wet earth, wild herb, roasted stone
Palate: Dense and warm at 50%, arroqueño-not-espadín carrying the structural heft the label doesn't promise. Simeón Ramírez at San Agustín Amatengo, unique expression whatever the tag says
Finish: Warming, mineral, very long
The bottom line
Buy, accidentally the best-priced Rezpiral arroqueño
