Rio Revuelto Ensamble

Ramón Cruz's espadín-madrecuishe – karwinskii doing the talking

Score: 3.5/5 agaves

Rio Revuelto Ensamble bottle
  • Producer: Rio Revuelto Mezcal
  • Maestro: Ramon Cruz
  • Region: Miahuatlán, Oaxaca
  • Agave: Espadin, Madrecuishe
  • ABV: 46%
  • Price: $55 ($$)

Verdict

Madrecuishe below 48% usually undersells, but at 46% and backed by espadín's sweetness, the math works – Ramón Cruz isn't asking the karwinskii to carry the bottle solo. Reads as a more affordable cousin of the Nuestra Soledad madrecuishe lots. Consensus 3.8 is slightly generous; we land at 3.5. Still a good pour for the money.

Madrecuishe asks for proof and this bottle obliges

Tasting notes

Nose: Wet stone with a saline edge, faint herb

Palate: 46% gives the madrecuishe the ceiling it needs; espadín grounds the sweetness while the karwinskii does the mineral work. Clean mid-palate, no flabbiness

Finish: Medium-long, saline, dry

The bottom line

Buy for an honest karwinskii ensamble under the big-label prices
