Verdict

Añejo mezcals at 40% are essentially wood-flavored espadín; the Sacacuento line's 3-year version is more interesting because of proof and time. This standard añejo is fine – it will satisfy a whiskey drinker looking for a crossover. Pass in favor of the 3-year if you're choosing between them.

At 40% the barrel wins every argument

Tasting notes

Nose: Vanilla with a light spice, faint cooked agave

Palate: 40% is where añejo decisions stop mattering much – the barrel takes over and the ABV isn't there to remind you of the agave

Finish: Sweet, warmly spiced. Stays medium

The bottom line

Pass if the 3-year is in stock next to it
