Sacapalabras Tobala

Tobalá at 50 – not for the timid

Score: 4.0/5 agaves

Sacapalabras Tobala bottle
  • Producer: Sacapalabras Mezcal
  • Maestro: Eduardo "Lalo" Angeles
  • Region: Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca
  • Agave: Tobala
  • ABV: 50%
  • Price: $70 ($$)

Verdict

Tobalá usually sits around 46–48%; at 50% the agave's character gets pushed toward intensity rather than elegance, which is Lalo Ángeles's general register. Sits close to the Dixeebe high-proof-tobalá playbook. 4.0

A tobalá with no interest in being polite

Tasting notes

Nose: Honeysuckle with crushed jasmine, faint citrus zest

Palate: 50% is a bold cap for tobalá and Lalo Ángeles keeps it clean – the agave's honey-mineral character gets concentrated rather than hot. Long, dense, cool

Finish: Floral-flinty, saline close – very long

The bottom line

Lands well if you like tobalá concentrated and cool
