Sacrificio Tobala
Tobalá on a big-box label – better than expected
Score: 3.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Sacrificio Mezcal, Total Wine Spirits Direct
- Maestro: Carlos Garcia Cruz
- Region: Tlacolula, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tobala
- ABV: 45%
- Price: $70 ($$)
Verdict
Tobalá wants proof, and Sacrificio, even as a Total Wine label, gets it to 45%, which is enough to let the agave register. Carlos García Cruz deserves a better brand. The bottle is honest for what it is, and sits at about the middle of the tobalá tier. Consensus 3.3 is fair; we come in at 3.0.
The Sacrificio bottle where the agave actually talks back
Tasting notes
Nose: Honey, green melon, light smoke, faint floral
Palate: 45% is the proof that makes this bottle plausible; tobalá's honey-mineral shape is legible even through the private-label polish
Finish: Clean, faintly floral
The bottom line
Fine if the price is low; pass if there's a single-mezcalero tobalá on the shelf
