Se Busca Mezcal Añejo
The López Sosa family añejo – quiet and clean
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Se Busca Mezcal
- Maestro: Mary López Sosa, Rodolfo López Sosa
- Region: San Juan del Rio, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 40%
- Price: $66 ($)
Verdict
Mary and Rodolfo López Sosa make a textbook añejo – 40% is the commercial constraint, but within it the barrel doesn't overrun the agave. Sits above the Sacrificio añejo tier and below any 45%+ aged expression in craft terms. Buy if the price is right; pass if a Salvadores añejo is next to it on the shelf.
An añejo whose wood knows when to stop
Tasting notes
Nose: Dark caramel, clove, dried fig, a soft agave
Palate: 40% and a long rest; barrel-forward but the López Sosa siblings' craft keeps the espadín legible. Clean, warming, not cloying
Finish: Warm, sweet-spice – long
