Verdict
Cupreata is one of the more distinctive agaves outside the Oaxaca mainstream, and Don Mateo Bautista's production makes a credible case for it. Michoacán cupreata runs earthier than Guerrero cupreata and more mineral than the Oaxacan wilds; the regional distinctions reward drinking across producers. Consensus 3.4 is a bit low. The bottle to pour for drinkers who think they've mapped the category already.
Cupreata earns its place next to the better-known wild agaves
Tasting notes
Nose: Dark fruit, earth, green pepper, faint smoke, a trace of wildflower
Palate: Dense and slightly bitter at 46% – cupreata's savory-earth character rendered without the commercial sanding that flattens most Michoacán bottlings in the US market
Finish: Warm, mineral – long
The bottom line
The bottle to try when you're tired of espadín. An education in non-Oaxacan mezcal
