Siempre Oaxaca Mexicano
Mexicano from Ejutla – cooperative floor, credible result
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Siempre Oaxaca Mezcal
- Region: Ejutla, Oaxaca
- Agave: Mexicano
- Price: $55 ($$)
Verdict
Mexicano deserves attention it rarely gets outside of Sola de Vega. Siempre Oaxaca's Ejutla version is a credible introduction, peppery, pear-sweet, mineral – even if it won't displace what Real Minero or Rey Campero do with the same agave. The cooperative pricing makes it a fair first pour.
A cooperative mexicano that doesn't insult the agave
Tasting notes
Nose: Cooked pear, white pepper, wet earth
Palate: Refrescador distillation keeps the mexicano's characteristic pepper and green-fruit sweetness intact, mid-weight, fairly built, nothing flashy
Finish: Peppery, lightly herbal. Medium
The bottom line
A decent mexicano at cooperative prices. Climb higher for the real thing
