Siete Misterios Coyote
Coyote from Siete Misterios – surprising and worth the price of admission
Score: 4.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Siete Misterios Mezcal
- Maestro: José Cruz Calvo, Lorenzo Amador
- Region: Sola de Vega, Oaxaca
- Agave: Coyote
- ABV: 46%
- Price: $65 ($$)
Verdict
Siete Misterios' coyote is one of the producer's stronger wild-agave bottlings. Any legitimate coyote on the US market is worth attention, the agave is rare enough that each bottling is a small category event, and at 46% the Sola de Vega production delivers the lavender-leather register coyote is known for, even if the proof is modest compared to the Jolgorio and El Buho high-proof coyotes. Consensus 3.9 reads accurate; we'd push slightly higher. A credible coyote alternative.
Coyote outside the Lachigui axis is a rare and welcome thing
Tasting notes
Nose: Lavender, hot stone, dark fruit
Palate: Floral-mineral character at 46% – less grand than the Jolgorio Coyote, but legitimately coyote
Finish: Cooling. Very long
The bottom line
A solid alternative when El Jolgorio Coyote is unavailable
