Sol de Oaxaca Joven

Certified organic, certified forgettable

Score: 2.5/5 agaves

Sol de Oaxaca Joven bottle
  • Producer: Sol de Oaxaca Mezcal
  • Region: Tlacolula, Oaxaca
  • Agave: Espadin
  • ABV: 40%
  • Price: $45 ($)

Verdict

Sol de Oaxaca banked its identity on USDA and Mayacert certifications, which look good on a label and do almost nothing for the glass. At 40% there's not enough structure to carry anything distinctive, and the Tlacolula house style here is generic Matatlán-adjacent. Pass. Banhez Ensamble costs less and delivers more.

Organic certification is not a flavor

Tasting notes

Nose: Light smoke with faint vanilla, nothing assertive

Palate: 40% is the category's minimum-viable proof and the liquid behaves accordingly – sweet, thin, agreeable in the way stock-photo music is agreeable

Finish: Sweet, clean – short

The bottom line

The certification pays for itself. The liquid doesn't
