Verdict
Tesoro Perdido exists because Total Wine wants a cheap mezcal with its own branding, and the bottle was contracted out to a Jalisco bottler in Tequila. None of that is illegal. All of it is telling. The liquid is the liquid – generic Oaxacan espadín bottled for retail price-point, and nothing about it argues for the category. Skip. Vida costs the same and means it.
Mezcal as private-label retail inventory
Tasting notes
Nose: Generic cooked agave with sweet top, faint vanilla
Palate: 43% carries a polished, anonymous espadín – bottled in a tequila-producing town for a retail private label, it tastes exactly like its origin story promises
Finish: Sweet, clean – short
The bottom line
A pass. Buy Vida, Banhez, or any bottle with a palenque behind it
