Verdict
Fernando Mitra's mexicano is fine in isolation and honest about what it is – a Sola de Vega mexicano at 47%, clay-pot-distilled, without the extra conviction the top-tier bottles bring. Tepanal's 50% mexicano and Siete Misterios's rare mexicano are both noticeably more committed. This bottle is the everyday mexicano, not the event.
Mexicano with the training wheels still on
Tasting notes
Nose: Cooked pear up front. White pepper, wet clay underneath
Palate: 47% carries mexicano's pepper-pear signature with the clay-pot texture the region demands – the agave's profile is legible but sits a half-step back from where Tepanal or Siete Misterios place it
Finish: Peppery, mineral – medium-long
The bottom line
Everyday mexicano. Climb to Tepanal or Siete Misterios
