Tomas Artesanal Espadin
An entry espadín that stops where it should start
Score: 3.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Tomas Artesanal
- Maestro: Roque Cruz Molina
- Region: Santa Ana, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 42%
- Price: $52 ($)
Verdict
Roque Cruz Molina has the credentials to do better than this, which is what makes the entry bottle frustrating. The liquid isn't flawed – it's just dialed down to a price-point the brand can afford to distribute. A couple of proof points higher and we'd be having a different conversation. As it stands, Banhez ensamble does more at the same price.
42% is the proof at which espadín starts saying something. This bottle stops there
Tasting notes
Nose: Cooked agave with a green banana, faint smoke, a trace of vanilla
Palate: Clean and mid-weight at 42%, but the ABV reads as a ceiling – the flavors arrive and leave without ever developing
Finish: Short, sweet, unmemorable
The bottom line
Competent espadín at the category floor. Skip for Banhez
