Tomas Artesanal Tepeztate
Tepextate at 45%, right at the edge of what the plant can carry
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Tomas Artesanal
- Maestro: Roque Cruz Molina
- Region: Santa Ana, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tepextate
- ABV: 45%
- Price: $116 ($$)
Verdict
Roque Cruz Molina has clearly coaxed a lot of the plant into the glass, the nose is all green florals, and the mid-palate has the mineral bite that makes tepextate worth the wait. But 45% is the proof at which a tepextate starts asking for another point or two. At 48% this would push into 4-agave territory; as bottled, Tosba's tepextate at 47.8% is a better argument for the agave at this price.
Tepextate below 48% is tepextate whispering
Tasting notes
Nose: Wet basil, white flowers, green pepper
Palate: Floral and mineral at 45%, with the tepextate doing legitimate work but the proof leaving the back palate thin
Finish: Clean, a touch short. Medium
The bottom line
Close. Needs two more proof points
