Tosba Espadin
The espadín Tosba makes when nobody's forcing them to hit 40%
Score: 4.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Tosba Mezcal
- Maestro: Edgar Gonzalez
- Region: San Cristobal Lachirioag, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 42%
- Price: $59 ($)
Verdict
Edgar Gonzalez is making the case that espadín can hold as much as you pour into it, the higher-proof Tosba expression is a working reference for what the agave does when a producer doesn't cut the back palate off. Between this and Dixeebe's 52% espadín, the 'boring agave' narrative is finally getting retired.
Espadín doesn't have to be the shelf's boring answer
Tasting notes
Nose: A green top over cooked agave, herbs, wet rope, a backing smoke
Palate: Concentrated and clean at the higher-proof bottling (~47%), with the espadín's sweetness earning the depth most commercial bottles flatten out. At 42% it reads one tier quieter but still honest
Finish: Mineral, slightly dry
The bottom line
A house-pour espadín with actual depth
