Tres Papalote Espadin
An espadín at 40% with nothing to say
Score: 2.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Tres Papalote Mezcal
- Region: Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 40%
- Price: $43 ($)
Verdict
At 40% and without a maestro credited on the label, Tres Papalote's espadín is doing everything a commodity bottle does – hitting a price, hitting a proof floor, making no argument for the liquid inside. Vida is cheaper and more honest; Banhez is the same price and actually has something to say.
40% espadín is the category admitting defeat
Tasting notes
Nose: Cooked agave, faint smoke, a sugary top note
Palate: Thin, sweet, flat at 40%, with whatever the distillery wanted to say drowned by the commercial proof floor
Finish: Sugary, gone. Stays short
The bottom line
A skip. 40% espadín is a price point, not a product
