Tres Santos Tepeztate
Tepextate at 45%, the edge where it starts working
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Tres Santos Mezcal
- Maestro: Miguel Martinez Jerónimo
- Region: San Dionisio Ocotepec, Oaxaca
- Agave: Tepextate
- ABV: 45%
- Price: $60 ($$)
Verdict
Martinez Jerónimo clearly respects the plant, the florals are in the right place, the minerality is in the right place – but a 25-year agave doesn't deserve to be underpowered in the glass. At 48% this bottle would push into 4-agave territory; as bottled it's a well-intentioned tepextate that finishes before it should. Tosba's 47.8% tepextate is the reference at this tier.
Tepextate deserves at least 48%. This is at 45
Tasting notes
Nose: White flower, green pepper, warm stone, a whisper of smoke
Palate: Floral and mineral, with the tepextate's slow-plant character intact but the back palate fading faster than it should
Finish: Clean, short for the agave, medium
The bottom line
A decent tepextate undersold by the proof
