Tres Tribus Cuishe
Nuxaño cuishe that keeps its ambitions modest
Score: 3.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Tres Tribus
- Maestro: Juan Antonio Coronel
- Region: San Francisco Nuxaño, Oaxaca
- Agave: Cuishe
- ABV: 44%
- Price: $70 ($$)
Verdict
Juan Antonio Coronel's work at San Francisco Nuxaño shows up better in the ensamble and capón expressions than here – the straight cuishe at 44% lacks the mineral density that the higher-proof karwinskii bottles deliver. It's an honest pour, just not the argument for Tres Tribus. Reach for the ensamble instead.
Karwinskii at 44% is the plant at half-voice
Tasting notes
Nose: Green hay walks in first. Then wet stone, cooked agave, faint smoke
Palate: With the cuishe's karwinskii structure legible but the back palate a little dry of sweetness; lean at 44%
Finish: Drying, mineral
The bottom line
Fine cuishe, but Tres Tribus has better bottles on the shelf
