Tres Tribus Tobala
A tobalá that stays polite when it could be louder
Score: 3.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Tres Tribus
- Maestro: Juan Antonio Coronel
- Region: San Francisco Nuxaño, Oaxaca
- ABV: 44%
- Price: $70 ($)
Verdict
The Tres Tribus tobalá lands as the brand's standard-proof bottle sitting at the wrong proof for the plant. Tobalá rewards 47% and above; at 44% the sweetness and florals are there but the structure is thin. Coronel's ensamble shows he can do more – the straight tobalá just isn't where the house is strongest. Pass for Banhez tobalá at the same price.
44% is the ceiling this tobalá never breaks through
Tasting notes
Nose: Honey, melon, a faint floral, stone
Palate: Mid-weight at 44%, with the tobalá legible but underpowered next to the category's references
Finish: Dry, clean – medium
The bottom line
Skip for the ensamble or Banhez tobalá
