Vago Espadin - Aquilino Garcia Lopez
Vago at the baseline – still one of the best espadíns at the price
Score: 3.5/5 agaves
- Producer: Vago Mezcal
- Maestro: Aquilino Garcia Lopez
- Region: Candelaria Yegole, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 50%
- Price: $94 ($$)
Verdict
Vago's standalone espadín is more textured and serious than most commercial espadín, even in the same price tier. 50% ABV does structural work, and the Aquilino García López production signature – present in every Vago he touches – gives the bottle a mineral depth that Del Maguey Vida at comparable pricing simply doesn't reach. Reviewer consensus aligns. It's the bottle we recommend as a Vida step-up, and the entry point to the Vago range proper.
Vago's espadín is what commercial espadín should aspire to
Tasting notes
Nose: Sweet cooked agave – then green apple, a thread of smoke
Palate: Rich and mineral – Aquilino's production signature is present even in the entry bottle. 50% ABV is a proper frame
Finish: Drying, clean. Long
The bottom line
The right step up from Del Maguey Vida
