Verdict
Mexicanito – the smaller Agave rhodacantha variant – in clay pots is exactly the sort of niche within niche that individual-maestro bottling was invented to make visible. Salomon Rodriguez's version runs leaner than the straight mexicano but with the en barro density carrying the weight. Track it alongside the en barro espadín and pechuga as the Tío Rey flight.
Tío Rey's en barro bottles are Sola de Vega at its most telling
Tasting notes
Nose: Warm stone with dried herbs, a savory earth note
Palate: Oily and mineral at 47.8%, with the mexicano character sharpened by the clay-pot distillation and kept honest by Rodriguez's hand
Finish: Warming, limestone – long
The bottom line
Track it. Clay-pot mexicanito from a reference maestro
