Verdict
Guillermo Abad Hernandez has a maestro's credit on the label, but at 40% the bottle lives in the same commodity zone as 400 Conejos and similar – Matatlán terroir compressed to a price point. For Matatlán with voice, step up to Real Minero or Mal Bien at the next tier. Skip for Banhez at the same price.
40% Matatlán espadín is the category at its most generic
Tasting notes
Nose: Faint smoke, a sweet top note
Palate: With the Matatlán fingerprint legible in outline but sanded down by the proof; thin and sweet at 40%
Finish: Sweet, gone. Short
The bottom line
Skip. 40% is the proof at which Matatlán espadín stops meaning anything
