Verás Joven

Unsigned Matatlán espadín at a commodity proof

Score: 2.5/5 agaves

Verás Joven bottle
  • Producer: Veras Mezcal
  • Region: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
  • Agave: Espadin
  • ABV: 40%
  • Price: $55 ($)

Verdict

Without a maestro named and at 40% proof, Verás's joven lives in the same anonymous corner of the shelf as most supermarket mezcals. The Matatlán fingerprint is faintly present, but there's nothing here to recommend over Banhez or Vida at the same price. Pass.

An unsigned bottle at 40% is the category admitting it doesn't need to try

Tasting notes

Nose: Faint smoke, a sweet edge

Palate: Thin and clean at 40%, with no maestro credited and the liquid reading as generic Matatlán

Finish: Sweet, unremarkable

The bottom line

Skip. Unsigned Matatlán espadín is the category's beige
