Verás Reposado
A reposado that surprises by not being terrible
Score: 3.0/5 agaves
- Producer: Veras Mezcal
- Region: Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca
- Agave: Espadin
- ABV: 40%
- Price: $63 ($)
Verdict
Reposado mezcal is a format that more often fails than succeeds, but Verás's version is the rare one where the wood-agave balance actually works. Pour it against the Tomas Reserva abocado and this is the more honest interpretation of aged mezcal – at 40% it's still proofed to a commodity number, but the integration is better than the category average.
Reposado mezcal rarely survives the category. This one does
Tasting notes
Nose: Wood with cooked agave, a faint savory undertone
Palate: Round at 40%, with the wood integrated rather than dominant and the Matatlán base reading through – the kind of reposado that earns its shelf space rather than embarrassing it
Finish: Warming, clean – medium
The bottom line
A surprising reposado. Still pour joven first
