Verdict
The Manzanita is the Wahaka bottle that argues the hardest for the producer. Manzanita is a Oaxacan hillside apple with a tart-sweet profile that distills cleanly, and Wahaka keeps the fruit as structure instead of decoration – the hard version of the format to pull off. A flavored bottle that respects the base it's flavoring.
Flavored mezcal that doesn't hide the mezcal
Tasting notes
Nose: Apple, then cooked agave, soft smoke, faint nut
Palate: Cleanly integrated at 45% – the manzanita accents rather than masks the espadín
Finish: Slightly sweet, warm. Long
The bottom line
A reasonable experimental bottle
